About this hunt
⚠️ Not a keep-what-you-find hunt: this is a guided archaeological metal-detecting survey run by Montpelier's archaeology team (project director Matthew Reeves), and finds stay with Montpelier. Over three days (Nov 11–13, 2026, all day) participants detect alongside the archaeologists and learn how metal detectors are used to find and define sites, how to plot finds, analyze survey patterns and identify artifacts. The survey area, in a field near Arlington House at 11350 Constitution Hwy, includes an 18th-century mill, a domestic site and a possible Civil War encampment. Open to the public; register via the form linked on the event page. Veteran discount and scholarships for veterans and descendants available — contact dig@montpelier.org or 540-672-2728 x161.
