About this hunt
A free community metal-detecting dig on roughly thirty acres of private land at 4261 Long Hill Road, Moravia, NY 13118 (Cayuga County, northwest of the village), Saturday August 15, 2026, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Billed as "Uncovering Our History Together — trash or treasure, each piece tells a story," and hosted by Elaine Peters of the Jordan Village Historian's office in partnership with the Owasco Community, LLC, the eleven-member group that owns the land and intends to leave it to the Finger Lakes Land Trust as "forever wild." The dig site is the triangle formed by three trails with a "barn bridge" at its base, adjacent to the site of a sawmill that operated from at least 1859 to 1904; the remains of a mill pond, earthen dam and sluiceway are still visible. Parties were held on the land through the 1960s and 70s, so bottles and cans of that era are common. Lunch is provided — sub sandwiches, snacks and water — and you may bring your own refreshments. RULES: park in the marked areas and follow the signs to the dig site; sign in with Elaine Peters at the table on the trail; stay out of the gorge, which is steep, shale-littered and strictly off-limits, along with the entire ten-acre south parcel; do not cross the wooden footbridge unless escorted by a member; do not stray onto surrounding property, which is private and posted; carry-in, carry-out.
